KOTA KINABALU: Top trail runners in Sabah received a notable recognition from the State Government when a total of nine local athletes were named as recipients of incentives worth up to RM27,400, the Sabah Trail Running Association (SATRA) announced today.
The nine Sabah athletes, who competed at national and international levels throughout 2019, were chosen for achieving the top three places in races some as far as 230km in distance, held all around the country and Southeast Asia such as Brunei, Indonesia, Thailand and Laos.
They are Milton Amat, Safrey Sumping, Daved Simpat, Sapirin Sumping, Wilson Singgin, Guianus Salagan, Kona Liau, Adelinah Litangah and Mailin Salungin.
“We are pleased that the State is acknowledging trail running as a sport that has gained tremendous popularity in our country, especially in Sabah. We have high performing endurance athletes that compete with some of the best in the region and they have given all of us a good name.
If I may add, their competitors know that these individuals are forces to be reckoned with on the race course,” President of SATRA Professor Dr Helen Benedict Lasimbang said when contacted today.
The Sabah Sports Council’s Athletes Incentive Presentation Ceremony 2019 was held at Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) earlier this week.
SATRA, in its third year of operation, has been instrumental in leading the forum to set up the Standard Operation and Guideline Procedures for Trail Races in Sabah during this pandemic period. The SOP, in cooperation with other trail race organizers in Sabah, were drawn up based on guidelines from international organizations namely the International Trail Running Association (ITRA).
SATRA conducted Malaysia’s first Runner’s Convention with partnership with the Faculty of Sports Science of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) in 2019.
